Start of the Holiday Season Kicks of Performances

The Patriot Band and Guard is in fulling swing going into December. After a brief lull due to Thanksgiving, the band has been getting ready for and performing in a variety of different venues.

Basketball season started this past week, with the OVMS Band performing at a boys basketball game, and the HS Pep band performing both Friday night for the boys and Saturday night for the boys and girls games.

Saturday during the day, the boosters held their annual Craft Fair in the middle school. The jazz band performed Saturday at Spencer's downtown Christmas parade performing jazzy versions of "Deck the Halls" and "Up on the Housetop" from a float.

This week will see members from Owen Valley Jazz perform at the Lion's Club dinner on Tuesday.

The HS Pep Band has two more basketball games before break, this week on Friday and on 12/14.

Finally, the whole program is preparing for their holiday concert on Sunday. Start time for the concert is 2:00pm with students reporting at 1:00pm. The Band Boosters are hosting a pre-concert lunch beginning at noon on Sunday. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. RSVPs are a must so please contact Mr. Thompson early this week with your requests.

MS Basketball Pep Band

For the first time in many years. The MS Band performed as a pep band for the OVMS Boys basketball game vs. Martinsville West. The band members had fun cheering on OV and performing classic pep band selections such as We Will Rock You and Iron Man. Thanks to all of the members that participated in this event! The OVMS Pep Band will perform for one more boys game on January 15th and is planning on schedule a couple girls games to perform at.

Band and Guard Alum to offer guard clinic

John Hall, class of 2010, will be offering a clinic to students interested in participating in the winter guards are Owen Valley. The clinics will be held from 4 - 6 pm on Monday, October 29th and Wednesday, October 31st in the high school band room. There will be no cost to attend the clinics and the clinic is designed to help potential guard members with upcoming guard auditions in the near future.

Fundraising Items to arrive tomorrow

Items from the band's fall fundraiser will arrive on Tuesday, October 30th. Students in the band programs sold items from Century Resources. Perishable items should be delivered by Tuesday evening. Students that are unable to deliver their items Tuesday evening, should follow instructions on the items and either refrigerate or freeze those items in the early evening.

Pep Band Cancelled for this Evening

Rain, rain go away! Pep Band for tonight's sectional football game versus Greenwood is cancelled due to the wet weather. We will try again if there are any more upcoming football playoff games. If not we will plan another event this spring for basketball season.

Winter Percussion Auditions

Auditions for Winter Percussion will be held, Thursday November 1st and Friday November 2nd from 4:00-6:00pm in the HS Bandroom and Auditorium. Percussionists interested in participating will need to pick up audition music from Mr. Thompson.

Band gears up for last home game

The band members have been working hard this week on preparing for our first all band performance of the year. 7th through 12th grade winds and percussionists will be performing at the High School's last home football game. They will be performing classic pep band tunes. The Patriot Band and Guard will also be honoring our senior marching band members: Tessa Cunningham, Tim Hickam, Sara Prewitt, Emily Richardson, and Toryn White. We a very grateful for their years of service to the marching program!

Senior Night Recognition and Band Night Set for October 5th

Musicians from all levels of the Owen Valley Band program will be performing at Owen Valley High School's final home football game of the regular season. A mass band will perform popular rock tunes throughout the evening. October 5th is also "Senior Night" and the band program will have the opportunity to recognize five seniors as part of the event. Drum Majors Toryn White and Tessa Cunningham, percussionist Tim Hickam, and guard members Emily Richardson and Sara Prewitt will all be thanked for their service to the Patriot Band and Guard.

Marching Band gears up for District contest

The Patriot Band and Guard will be going to Columbus East this weekend to perform at Indiana State School Music Association District level contest. The marching band will perform at 2:02pm and will need to score at or above 54.00 points to receive and gold rating and move on to regional competition on October 13th. This year's show is titled "Monstrosity" with music by Metallica. The band and guard spent the week cleaning the beginning of the show and putting finishing touches on the end of the show, including a new ending set involving a flag tunnel. Good luck Patriots!

Owen Valley Band begins a student fundraiser

This week the Owen Valley Band program began a fundraiser directed at raising funds for individual student accounts. Money from the fundraiser, provided by Century Resources, will go to credit student accounts. If a band or guard member does not have a balance on their account they can then allocated it towards the Disney trip, or keep the remaining credit for future use with the program. The fundraiser will end on October 8th and delivery is slated for the end of October.

Jazz band receives new music through grant

Thanks to a generous grant provided by the Owen County Community Foundation. Owen Valley's jazz band has received four new charts for their music library. The grant was part of the Owen County Community Foundation's Teacher Mini Grant program. The Owen Valley Jazz has performed multiple times over the summer in events around Owen County, including the Arts in the Park program at McCormick's Creek State Park, the Owen County Fair, on the 1st teacher day for Spencer Owen Community Schools, and for the Owen County Preservation Society. The band will next perform at the Fall band concert on October 2nd. The new charts include jazz standards such as St. Thomas, a transcription for jazz band of Libertango, and two pop infused selections by Blood, Sweat, and Tears and Earth, Wind and Fire (God Bless the Child and In The Stone).

First Notes Concert September 25th!

First year wind and percussion students are preparing for their first notes concert. This concert is the culmination of their work during the first nine weeks. Over this period they have learned the parts of their instrument, how to take care of their instruments, how to put them together, the names of their notes and rhythms, and have begun to play short songs in unison.

Jazz Band Performs at Riverfest

Owen Valley Jazz performed at the first annual "Riverfest" festival held at Cooper Park in downtown Spencer on Saturday. The band played a set at 2:00 for approximately a half an hour. It was a busy Saturday for the Jazz kids who also had a 9-4 marching band rehearsal that day. We really appreciated having the opportunity to be a part of that event. New School Year Ushers in Record Numbers

The Patriot Band and Guard began a new school year with a bang. The Jazz Band performed several times over the summer and one highlight was a performance at the first corporation teacher meeting of the year. The Marching Band sizzled on the black top over during band camp and pushed through a good portion of their competitive show "Monstrosity". As the school year began the program saw a large increase in band numbers, with 35 freshmen coming into the high school band class and over 70 new beginning band members. 7th-12th enrollment has surpassed 150 students for the first time in the past five years, with lots of room to grow!

Band Gears Up for First Game

Tomorrow is game day and the marching band as well as the advanced and intermediate concert bands are gearing up to perform. With a new focus on community performances the bands will be very active at games and parades this year. Report time is 6:00 with kick off at 7:00. Dress is Polos and Jeans, Go Patriots!

McCormick's Creek Dinner Showcases Jazz Ensemble

Monday, May 14th was the Owen Valley Band's first dinner fundraiser at the Canyon Inn and the first performance of the year. During the evening, Band and Guard students waited on tables and served drinks and rolls for diners. The Jazz band also serenaded the crowd with a short set of jazz classics. We thank the Canyon Inn and McCormick's Creek State Park for their hospitality and look forward to another event like this in the near future.

Percussion Wows at Wedding

The winter percussion ensemble performed at a wedding this past weekend in Ellettsville. The mother of the bride made the request because the bride is an Owen Valley grad and the groom is in the military. In addition to performing on Battery equipment the percussionists also performed on concert percussion. It was a beautiful day and the students' performance was well received.

OV Band Receives Grant

Thanks go out to booster parent Steve Jackson and the Greencastle Walmart Distribution Center #6022 for providing the Band an Guard with a grant for $1500! This money will go towards alleviating costs to the performers attending the trip to Disney World in March 2013. Thanks so much for your support!

Percussion and Guard Community Performance

The Winter Percussion and Winter Guard are planning on performing for friends and family members on Monday, April 9th at 7pm in the OVHS Main Gym. Both groups found success towards the end of their respective seasons with the Winter Guard receiving a Gold rating at their last show and the Winter Percussion qualifying for state finals and placing 10th. Please join us to recognize the hard work of these two groups.

Cheesecakes are here!

Thanks to all of the band and guard kids that worked hard to sell cheesecakes. Nearly 250 cheesecakes will be delievered Saturday, March 24th. They may be picked up between 2 and 3pm on that day in the high school band room. Enjoy!

Winter Percussion Qualifies for State Finals!

Congratulations to the Owen Valley Winter Percussion Ensemble for becoming a 2012 Indiana Percussion Association State Finalist! They will be performing at Ben Davis High School at 10am on Saturday, March 24th for their place in the top ten of Scholastic Concert Class A. Good Luck!

Middle School Bands Travel to Bedford

Saturday the 7th and 8th Grade Concert Bands went down to Bedford North Lawrence High School for the Indiana Music Educators Association Non-Competitive Music Festival. The 7th grade band performed Midnight Sky and Infinity and the 8th grade band performed Antiqutius and Train Heading West. Both groups represented Owen Valley well and received some great feed back from their clinicians.

Winter Guard Finishes Season Strong

Congratulations goes out to the Owen Valley Winter Guard. This past Saturday they went to Franklin Central High School to compete in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association Divisional Finals. The received a Gold Rating and scored very high within their class. Great Job!

Zipadeedoodah!

Over one hundred Band and Guard members and their families have signed up for the trip to Disney World in 2013! We are excited about the opportunities this will provide for the families of our program. There is still opportunities for our members and their families to add on to the trip, but space is going quickly. Please contact Mr. Thompson if you have any questions.

Pep Band - All Band Night

We've invited all of the students in the Owen Valley Band program to come perform at the final Boy's basketball game of the year! All of the students have been working hard this week to come up with songs to perform. Report time is 5:30pm. Students should eat dinner prior to arriving. Dress for the game will be band polos and blue jeans. The students will begin performing at 7:00pm and will be done at approximately 9:15pm. Hope to see you there!

Congratulations to all of the Middle School and High School Students that particpated in Solo and Ensemble on Saturday. We had a great showing. Owen Valley's winter guard will be hosting a IHSCGA Winter Guard Show on January 28th. We are excited to once again have the opportunity to host this event and need volunteers to run the event. There will be an informational meeting for volunteers held at 6pm in the High School band room on January 27th. At that time assignments will be given out for volunteers and we will set up for the event.

Disney World Trip Meeting!
The Band and Guard will be going to Disney World during Spring Break in 2013. Band and guard students and their families are invited to come to an informational meeting about the trip. It will be held at 7pm in the High School Band room on January 17th. Michael Gray a representative from Music Travel Consultants will give a presentation about the details of the trip.
