Patriot Band and Guard Receives Prestigious All Music Award

Owen Valley High School’s Band Department recently received their banner for qualifying for the Indiana State School Music Association All Music Award. This award is given annually to programs that receive a “Gold Rating” in all ISSMA events during the year. The criteria are as follows:

1. Gold Rating at ISSMA Regional for Marching Band
2. Gold Rating at ISSMA Jazz Contest
3. Gold Rating at ISSMA Concert Band Contest
4. Having at least one soloist qualify for ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble
5. Having at least one ensemble qualify for ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble

This achievement was only met by 68 high schools band programs in the State of Indiana. Only 19 of those 68 band programs also qualified as ISSMA Open Class Marching Band State Finalists this year. 2018 marked Owen Valley’s return to Marching Band State finals for the first time since 1999. This followed an impressive fall where the Band and Guard swept awards and captions at two invitationals and also received a special “Distinction in Visual”, along with their Gold Rating at ISSMA Regionals.

The program’s success continued through the Winter where 10 band students qualified for State Solo and Ensemble. The HS Jazz Ensemble received Gold Ratings from all three adjudicators, along with “Distinguished Soloist Awards” for seven of their eight jazz soloists. Owen Valley’s Winter Percussion made their 20th Indiana Percussion Association State Finals Appearance, and Owen Valley’s Varsity Winter Guard qualified for Indiana State School Color Guard Association A Class Semi Finals. In April, the HS Concert Band received a Gold Rating in Performance and and Gold Rating in Sight Reading, a honor they’ve reach five of the past six years.

This is Owen Valley’s second All Music Award in the past three years and the only two in the program's history. In regards to this year’s accomplishments, Director of Bands Dominic Thompson says “A huge amount of credit needs to go out to our hard working students, parents, boosters, and band and guard staff members for what they have done for the Patriot Band and Guard and our community. The evolution that I’ve seen in this program as I have been here over the past ten years has been  incredible, and it has been an honor to get to be a part of it. I am most proud of the support and validation that the kids have received for their efforts this year. I am grateful for my assistant Thomas Russell and for our District and Building Administrators, especially Rhonda Schafer and Aaron LaGrange, who have been incredibly supportive of Thomas and I.”
